*AUG 22 - EZEKIEL 4-24 - JERUSALEM TO BE JUDGED*

*1. 4:8 (4-7, ESV) SIGNS: PROPHECIES OF BABYLONIAN CAPTIVITY. “And behold,
I will place cords upon you, so that you cannot turn from one side to the
other, till you have completed the days of your siege.” *As King of Your
dominion, O Jehovah, You punish disobedience for our good. Thank You for
Your faithfulness as a wise, firm and loving Father. Your chastisements are
a mark of Your love and favor! *Hallowed be your :name.*

*2. 11:19-20 (8-11) VISIONS: PROPHECY OF RESTORATION. “And I will give
them one heart, and a new spirit I will put within them. I will remove the
heart of stone from their flesh and give them a heart of flesh, 20 that
they may walk in my statutes and keep my rules and obey them. And they
shall be my people, and I will be their God.” *We hear Your Word, O Father;
we submit to Your will. *Your :kingdom come!*

*3. 12:28 (12-17) SIGNS: PROPHECIES OF BABYLONIAN CAPTIVITY. “Therefore
say to them, Thus says the Lord GOD: None of my words will be delayed any
longer, but the word that I speak will be performed, declares the Lord
GOD.” *There is a time in Your Kingdom O Father, for fulfillment of Your
prophecies. As judgment for Israel then, so restoration for Your church
now! * **Your :will be done, As in heaven, so on earth.*

*4. 18:31 (18:1-20:44) SERMONS. “Cast away from you all the transgressions
that you have committed, and make yourselves a new heart and a new spirit!
Why will you die, O house of Israel?” *Father how patient and longsuffering
You are to Your people! How You plead with us to meet the conditions that
permit Your blessing! *Our :daily :bread Give us this day!*

*5. 22:30 (20:45-22:31) SIGNS OF JUDGMENT. “And I sought for a man among
them who should build up the wall and stand in the breach before me for the
land, that I should not destroy it, but I found none.” *O Father, find
among us today for Your Church and Israel, what You could not find for
Israel in days gone by! In judgment remember mercy, for it is time to
complete Your restoration. *And forgive us our :debts, As we also have
forgiven our :debtors.*

*6. 23:4 (23) PARABLE OF OHOLAH AND OHOLIBAH. “Oholah was the name of the
elder and Oholibah the name of her sister. They became mine, and they bore
sons and daughters. As for their names, Oholah is Samaria, and Oholibah is
Jerusalem.” *Your patience and longsuffering O Father, were tested beyond
limits. Only judgment was left! *And bring us not into temptation.*

*7. 24:24 (24) PROPHECIES AGAINST JERUSALEM. “Thus shall Ezekiel be to you
a sign; according to all that he has done you shall do. When this comes,
then you will know that I am the Lord GOD.” *Father, You *are* the Lord
Jehovah! You *are* Sovereign Lord! You *are* the everlasting Covenant God! *But
deliver us from the evil one!*

*NOTE**: 14:20 (12-17) THE IMMUTABILITY OF GOD’S WILL IN JUDGMENT! **“Even
if Noah, Daniel, and Job were in it, as I live, declares the Lord GOD, they
would deliver neither son nor daughter. They would deliver but their own
lives by their righteousness.” *O Father, how terrible are Your
judgmentsin all the earth, and how righteous. Teach us to apply our
hearts unto
wisdom in the light of the times in which we live.”

*C.H. Spurgeon Quotes: “Spurgeon Eschatology”. *Some think that this
descent of the Lord will be post-millennial - that is, after the thousand
years of his reign. I cannot think so. I conceive that the advent will be
pre-millennial; that he will come first; and then will come the millennium
as the result of his personal reign upon earth. Notice, next, dear friends,
that it is not good for you to know the times and the seasons. That is what
the Savior means when he says, “It is not for you to know.” For, first, it
would distract your attention from the great things of which you have to
think.

*Our Psalm for the day: 52:8-9 (52) THE STEADFAST LOVE OF GOD ENDURES. “But
I am like a green olive tree in the house of God. I trust in the steadfast
love of God forever and ever. 9 I will thank you forever, because you have
done it. I will wait for your name, for it is good, in the presence of the
godly.” *Father, You are the One Who delivers us from our enemies, gives
retribution, and makes us rest in You! *Hallowed be your :name!*

*Title: *“To the Chief Musician.” Even short Psalms, if they record but
one instance of the goodness of the Lord, and rebuke but briefly the pride
of man, are worthy of our best minstrelsy. When we see that each Psalm is
dedicated to “the chief musician,” it should make us value our Psalmody and
forbid us to praise the Lord carelessly. “Maschil.” An instructive. Even
the malice of a Doeg may furnish instruction to a David. “A Psalm of
David.” He was the prime object of Doeg’s doggish hatred, and therefore the
most fitting person to draw from the incident the lesson concealed within
it.

52:1. *Why do you boast yourself in mischief, O mighty man? ** *Doeg had
small matter for boasting in having procured the slaughter of a band of
defenseless priests. A mighty man indeed to kill men who never touched a
sword! He ought to have been ashamed of his cowardice. He had no room for
exultation! Honorable titles are but irony where the wearer is mean and
cruel.

52:3. *Selah*. Let us pause and look at the proud, blustering liar. Doeg
is gone, but other dogs bark at the Lord’s people. Saul’s cattle-master is
buried, but the devil still has his drovers, who fain would hurry the
saints like sheep to the slaughter.’’

52:4. *You love. *You have a taste, a gusto for evil language. *All
devouring words. *There are words that, like boa-constrictors, swallow men
whole, or like lions, rend men to pieces; these words evil minds are fond
of. Their oratory is evermore furious and bloody. That which will most
readily provoke the lowest passions that are sure to empty, and they think
such pandering to the madness of the wicked to be eloquence of a high
order. *O you deceitful tongue. *Men can manage to say a great many furious
things and yet cover all over with the pretext of justice. They claim that
they are jealous for the right, but the truth is they are determined to put
down truth and holiness and craftily go about it under this transparent
pretense.

52:7. *Lo.* Look you here, and read the epitaph of a mighty man, who
lorded it proudly during his little hour and set his heel upon the necks of
the Lord’s chosen. *This is the man that made not God his strength. *Behold
the man, the great, vainglorious man! He found a fortress, but not in God;
he gloried in his might, but not in the Almighty. Where is he now? How has
it fared with him in the hour of his need? Behold his ruin, and be
instructed. *But trusted in the abundance of his riches, and strengthened
himself in his wickedness. *The substance he had gathered and the mischiefs
he had wrought were his boast and glory. Wealth and wickedness are dreadful
companions; when combined they make a monster. When the devil is master of
money-bags, he is a devil indeed. Beelzebub and Mammon together heat the
furnace seven times hotter for the child of God, but in the end they shall
work out their own destruction. Wherever we see today a man great in sin
and substance, we shall be well to anticipate his end and view this verse
as the divine in memoriam. *(From “The Treasury of David” by C.H. Spurgeon,
abridged by D.O. Fuller)*
