*JUL 20 - ISAIAH 49-53 - ISRAEL THE TYPE: CHRIST THE FULFILLMENT*

*1. 49:5-6 (49:1-12, ESV) MESSIAH: HIS CALL AND MINISTRY. And now the LORD
says, he who formed me from the womb to be his servant, to bring Jacob back
to him; and that Israel might be gathered to him - for I am honored in the
eyes of the LORD, and my God has become my strength - 6 he says: “It is too
light a thing that you should be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob
and to bring back the preserved of Israel; I will make you as a light for
the nations, that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth.” *Father,
*Hallowed be your :name!*

*2. 49:25 (49:13-26) ISRAEL: RESTORATION AND DELIVERANCE. For thus says
the LORD: “Even the captives of the mighty shall be taken, and the prey of
the tyrant be rescued, for I will contend with those who contend with you, and
I will save your children.” *O Father, who is like unto You, fearful in
praises, doing wonders? Your promises are so great - even the saving of our
sons! *Your :kingdom come!*

*3. 50:4 (50) MESSIAH: ABLE TO REDEEM DIVORCED ISRAEL. “The Lord GOD has
given me the tongue of those who are taught, that I may know how to sustain
with a word him who is weary. Morning by morning he awakens; he awakens my
ear to hear as those who are taught.” *Father, You supplied all needs of
Messiah. So shall You do with the members of His body. *Your :will be done,
As in heaven, so on earth!*

*4. 51:11 (51) JEHOVAH: HIS OFFER OF COMFORT. “And the ransomed of the
LORD shall return and come to Zion with singing; everlasting joy shall be
upon their heads; they shall obtain gladness and joy, and sorrow and
sighing shall flee away.” *O our Father, in the light of Your great mercies
to Israel and Your Church, our heart is humbled! We come in contrition and
repentance to You. Reconcile us! *Our :daily :bread Give us this day.*

*5. 52:7 (52:1-12) JEHOVAH: CALLS ZION TO COMFORT AND RESTORATION. “How
beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news, who
publishes peace, who brings good news of happiness, who publishes
salvation, who says to Zion, ‘Your God reigns.’” *Blessed, O Father, is he
who through intercession, the first step of evangelism, announces in the
unseen world the Good News of Redemption. *And forgive us our :debts, As we
also have forgiven our :debtors.*

*6. 52:13 (52:13-53:1) MESSIAH: JEHOVAH INTRODUCES HIS SERVANT. “Behold,
my servant shall act wisely; he shall be high and lifted up, and shall be
exalted.” *Father, this is Your Word concerning Jesus, Your only begotten
Son, our Messiah! Blessed be Your Name for granting us Him Who is Jehovah
the Savior! Your Name is written upon Him. *And bring us not into
temptation!*

*7. 53:4-5 (53:2-12) MESSIAH: HIS WORK OF PROPITIATION. “Surely he has
borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken,
smitten by God, and afflicted. 5 But he was wounded for our transgressions;
he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that
brought us peace, and with his stripes we are healed.” *Father, Your love
for us in Jesus crushes our soul; brings us to deep contrition
andrepentance. Your Goodness in Christ leads us to repentance!
*But deliver us from the evil one!*

*NOTE**: 53:6 (53:2-12) **MESSIAH: BORE OUR INIQUITY! “All we like sheep
have gone astray; we have turned - every one - to his own way; and the LORD
has laid on him the iniquity of us all.” *Jesus, the last Adam, You have
overturned the work of the first Adam!

*Our Psalm for the day: 20:1-4 (20) TRUST IN THE NAME OF THE LORD OUR
GOD! “May
the LORD answer you in the day of trouble! May the name of the God of Jacob
protect you! 2 May he send you help from the sanctuary and give you support
from Zion! 3 May he remember all your offerings and regard with favor your
burnt sacrifices! Selah 4 May he grant you your heart’s desire and fulfill
all your plans! Hallowed be your :name,** *O Jehovah Father!

Subject: We have before us a national anthem fitted to be sung at the
outbreak of war, when the monarch was girding on his sword for the fight.
If David had not been vexed with wars, we might never have been favored
with many such Psalms as this. There is a needs-be for the trials of one
saint, that he may yield consolation to others.

20:1 *The Lord hear you in the day of trouble. *What a mercy that we may
pray in the day of trouble, and what a still more blessed privilege that no
trouble can prevent the Lord from hearing us! Troubles roar like thunder,
but the believer’s voice will be heard above all the storm.

20:2 *Send you help from the sanctuary. *Men of the world despise
sanctuary help, but our hearts have learned to prize it beyond all material
aid. They seek help out of the armory, or the treasury, or the battery, but
we turn to the sanctuary.

20:3 *Remember all your offerings, and accept you**r** burnt sacrifice.
Selah. *Before war kings offered sacrifice, upon the acceptance of which
they depended for success; our blessed Lord presented Himself as a victim,
and was a sweet savor unto the Most High, and then He met and routed the
embattled legions of hell.

20:5 *We will rejoice in Your salvation. *We should fixedly resolve that
come what may, we will rejoice in the saving arm of the Lord Jesus. The
people in this Psalm, before their king went to battle, felt sure of
victory, and therefore began to rejoice beforehand; how much more ought we
to do this who have seen the victory completely won! Unbelief begins
weeping for the funeral before the man is dead; why should not faith
command piping before the dance of victory begins?

20:7 *Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the
Name of the Lord our God.* Chariots and horses make an imposing show, and
with their rattling and dust and fine caparisons make so great a figure
that vain man is much taken with them; yet the discerning eye of faith sees
more in an invisible God than in all these. The most dread war-engine of
David’s day was the war-chariot, armed with scythes, which mowed down men
like grass: this was the boast and glory of the neighboring nations; but
the saint considered the name of Jehovah to be a far better defense. The
name of our God is Jehovah, and this should never be forgotten; the
self-existent, independent, immutable, ever-present, all-filling I AM. Let
us adore that matchless Name and never dishonor it by distrust or creature
confidence.

20:8. *They are brought down and fallen. *The world, death, Satan, and
sin, shall be trampled beneath the feet of the champions of faith; while
those who rely upon an arm of flesh shall be ashamed and confounded
forever. (From “The Treasury of David” by C. H. Spurgeon, abridged by D. O.
Fuller)
