 *JUN 19 - 2 KINGS 1-3 - ELISHA: BEGINNING OF HIS MINISTRY*

 *1. 1:15b-16 (1, ESV) ELIJAH: FORETELLS DEATH OF AHAZIAH. So Elijah arose
and went down with him to the king 16 and said to him, “Thus says the LORD,
‘Because you have sent messengers to inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of
Ekron - is it because there is no God in Israel to inquire of his word? -
therefore you shall not come down from the bed to which you have gone up,
but you shall surely die.” *It is dangerous to mess with a prophet, a true
man of God. Through him Your true Kingdom O Father, is made manifest. *Hallowed
be your :name.*

 *2. 2:9 (2:1-12) ELISHA: RECEIVES MANTLE OF ELIJAH. “When they had
crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, ‘Ask what I shall do for you, before I am
taken from you.’ And Elisha said, ‘Please let there be a double portion of
your spirit on me.’” *This is a bold request! Father, make us like Elisha,
one who *hungered* and *thirsted* after righteousness. We would let
*Your*will be done in us as it is in heaven!
*Your :kingdom come!*

 *3. 2:14 (2:13-18) ELISHA: DRAMATICALLY COMMENCES HIS MINISTRY. “Then he
took the cloak of Elijah that had fallen from him and struck the water,
saying, ‘Where is the LORD, the God of Elijah?’ And when he had struck the
water, the water was parted to the one side and to the other, and Elisha
went over.” *Elijah had been noted through signs, wonders and
miracles; nowElisha had joined him.
*You* confirmed their words in this way, Father! *Your :will be done, As in
heaven, so on earth!*

 *4. 2:22 (2:19-22) ELISHA: HEALS WATER AND BARREN LAND. “So the water has
been healed to this day, according to the word that Elisha spoke.” *This is
a powerful word! O forgive us Father, that so few of us have the zeal and
desire of Elisha to so press in, that it is right for You to honor Your
word through us. *Our :daily :bread Give us this day.*

 *5. 2:24 (2:23-25) ELISHA: IRREVERENCE CURSED. “And Elisha turned around,
and when he saw them, he cursed them in the name of the LORD. And two
she-bears came out of the woods and tore forty-two of the boys.” *When we
mock Your servants, we mock *You*, O Great Jehovah Father. When Israel
rejected Samuel, they rejected *You*. We take warning from these youths.
May we walk softly before You in Your fear. *And forgive us our :debts, As
we also have forgiven our :debtors.*

 *6. 3:14-15 (3:1-15) ELISHA: REBUKES ALLIANCE OF JEHOSHAPHAT AND JEHORAM. And
Elisha said, “As the LORD of hosts lives, before whom I stand, were it not
that I have regard for Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, I would neither look
at you nor see you. 15 But now bring me a musician.” And when the musician
played, the hand of the LORD came upon him. *Music restores us to prophetic
usefulness, even though we stand in your presence, Father! *And bring us
not into temptation.*

 *7. 3:16, 18 (3:16-27) ELISHA: PROPHESIES WATER AND VICTORY. And he said,
“Thus says the LORD, ‘I will make this dry streambed full of pools.’ 18 This
is a light thing in the sight of the LORD. He will also give the Moabites
into your hand.” *What a powerful word! No word from You Father, is void of
power. You *watch over* Your word to perform it! *But deliver us from the
evil one!*

 *NOTE**: 1:15 (1) ELIJAH: RECEIVES GOD’S WORD. **Then the angel of the
LORD said to Elijah, “Go down with him; do not be afraid of him.” So he
arose and went down with him to the king. *We should not be afraid of the
ministry of angels; yet neither should we go looking for this, nor be
tempted to worship Your messengers, Father.

 Elisha asked from Elijah a double portion of the Spirit. In Israeli
history, the first-born son receives a double portion over and above the
following sons. So Joseph received in Ephraim and Manasseh 2 parts in the
12 tribe over against his brothers.

 This is what Elisha was asking of Elijah - a double portion as his
spiritual first-born. and - there are those who have checked through the
miracles performed by these two - and discovered that Elisha performed
twice those of Elijah.

 However - just as Jacob as the father of Joseph superseded him in honor as
a member of the three Israeli patriarchs: Abraham, Isaac and Jacob - so
Jesus said that for Elijah - none superseded him among OT prophets - and
this included Elisha.

 *Our chapter of Proverbs for the day: 19:17 (19) PROVERBS OF SOLOMON. “Whoever
is generous to the poor lends to the LORD, and he will repay him for his
deed.” *We lend to You Father, when we give to the poor. Charles H.
Spurgeon knew and practiced this *well*. O teach us that when we walk in
this truth - we are *Hallowing your :name!*
