 *JUN 3 - 2 SAMUEL 21-23 - DAVID: MARKS OF A SPIRITUAL MAN*

*1. 21:1 (21:1-9, ESV) DAVID: DISCOVERS BROKEN COVENANT CAUSING FAMINE. Now
there was famine in the days of David for three years, year after year. And
David sought the face of the LORD. And the LORD said, “There is bloodguilt
on Saul and on his house, because he put the Gibeonites to death.” *Saul
broke the Covenant Joshua made with the Gibeonites more than 400 years
previous. And this act grieved *You*, Father! Show us that Your Kingdom is
based on Covenant which must *not* be broken. *Hallowed be your :name!*

*2. 21:10 (21:10-11) DAVID: HEARD WHAT RIZPAH DID. “Then Rizpah the
daughter of Aiah took sackcloth and spread it for herself on the rock, from
the beginning of harvest until rain fell upon them from the heavens. And
she did not allow the birds of the air to come upon them by day, or the
beasts of the field by night.” *David took note of this righteous act.
*You*Lord Jesus, David’s greater Son, are aware of all things in Your
Kingdom!
Father, Your will be done in us as it was in David here. *Your :kingdom
come.*

*3. 21:14 (21:12-14) DAVID: PROPERLY BURIES SAUL AND JONATHAN. “David went
and took the bones of Saul and the bones of his son Jonathan from the men
of Jabesh-gilead, who had stolen them from the public square of Beth-shan,
where the Philistines had hanged them, on the day the Philistines killed
Saul on Gilboa.” *Three things David did to rectify the wrongs of Saul
before You healed the land, Father. May we determine too to walk
righteously in Kingdom Covenant principles. *Your :will be done, As in
heaven, so on earth.*

*4. 21:17 (21:15-22) DAVID: BARELY DEFEATS THE PHILISTINE GIANTS. “But
Abishai the son of Zeruiah came to his aid and attacked the Philistine and
killed him. Then David’s men swore to him, ‘You shall no longer go out with
us to battle, lest you quench the lamp of Israel.’” *Here is wise counsel.
As Jonathan was rescued from Saul by the people, so David is rescued from
his own foolhardiness by the people. O forgive us Father, that we often act
apart from counsel and common sense! *Our :daily :bread Give us this day.*

*5. 22:29-30 (22) DAVID’S LAST SONG: NINE THINGS OF GOD. “For you are my
lamp, O LORD, and my God lightens my darkness. 30 For by you I can run
against a troop, and by my God I can leap over a wall.” *This is a passage
of light after some dark tunnels. Thank You Father, that You temper
chastisement for Your sons with *mercy*. Yes, You do not allow us to be
tempted above what we are able to bear! *And forgive us our :debts, As we
also have forgiven our :debtors.*

*6. 23:2-4 (23:1-7) DAVID’S LAST WORDS. “The Spirit of the LORD speaks by
me; his word is on my tongue. 3 The God of Israel has spoken; the Rock of
Israel said to me: When one rules justly over men, ruling in the fear of
God, 4 he dawns on them like the morning light, like the sun shining forth
on a cloudless morning, like rain that makes grass to sprout from the
earth.” *It is by Your Covenant Father, that You caused David to triumph.
Yes, an understanding of this is the basis of Kingdom Victory, and
*our*triumph too!
*And bring us not into temptation!*

*7. 23:16 (23:8-39) DAVID’S MIGHTY MEN. “Then the three mighty men broke
through the camp of the Philistines and drew water out of the well of
Bethlehem that was by the gate and carried and brought it to David. But he
would not drink of it. He poured it out to the LORD.” *How You blessed
David Father, by giving him such men! How You blessed Your Son Jesus by the
first 12 apostles, and by all men and women since! *But deliver us from the
evil one!*

*NOTE**: 21:3 (21:1-9) BROKEN COVEN**ANT: REQUIRES RIGHTEOUS RESTITUTION. And
David said to the Gibeonites, “What shall I do for you? And how shall I
make atonement, that you may bless the heritage of the LORD?” *See how
David understood the importance of Covenant from the perspective of God!
May we too see the importance of keeping our word in the sight of our God!
Psalm 15:4 - “Who swears to his own hurt and does not change” - is one who
shall sojourn in God’s tent - and dwell in His holy hill!”

Possibly this is one of the most important attributes in the life of
David, marking him out as a spiritual man: namely, understanding - and *walking
in* Covenant!

It used to be in America - that a man was *as good as* his word! Today all
too often, our word of promise means very little. It is like a cloud
promising rain - but fails to deliver.

Again - it used to be - and occasionally still is - that a man’s word
involving millions of dollars was sealed by a handshake - until it could be
written up legally.

To note carefully how David discovered why God had sent famine to his land
for 3 years - and how he courteously sought out the Gibeonites to settle
with them how they could bless the heritage of the LORD - *this* deserves
emulation on the part of each one of us - especially should we desire to be
counted by God as a spiritual person.

It is better *not* to promise - than to promise and fail to keep it. Our
words should *not* require an oath to satisfy the other party that we will
follow thought. Jesus said a Yes should always *mean* Yes! and our No, No!

These are Kingdom principles that David sought to keep throughout his
life, and which his greater Son, Jesus - *always* kept before His Father.

I was a Boy Scout in my teen years. If we made a promise to a fellow scout
- and he doubted whether we would keep that promise or not - he would then
challenge with - “On your Scout’s honor?” If we replied in the affirmative
- then he would believe us. But - a boy scout should keep his word without
swearing on his scout’s honor. And *we* as Kingdom citizens like David,
should keep our simple promise - a good sign of a spiritual man.

My mother ingrained this into my brother and me. Then when becoming a
believer at 20 years of age, the Holy Spirit deepened this - as I meditated
over the word of God. Joshua 1:8 became one of a number of life texts for
me.

*Our Proverbs chapter for the day: 3:5-6 (3) TRUST IN THE LORD WITH ALL
YOUR HEART. “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your
own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make
straight your paths.” *By the Holy Spirit, David’s son Solomon wrote these
wise words for his son. It is a pity that Solomon forsook his own counsel, and
his son Rehoboam also forsook his father’s counsel and failed to make a
good mark in Your Kingdom, Father. But still - *Hallowed be your :name!*
