 *MAY 26 - 1 SAMUEL 16-20 - DAVID: ANOINTED AND PERSECUTED*

*1. 16:13 (16:1-13, ESV) DAVID: CHOSEN AND ANOINTED KING. “Then Samuel
took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers. And the
Spirit of the LORD rushed upon David from that day forward. And Samuel rose
up and went to Ramah.” *Not Samuel’s choice, but *Your* choice prevailed,
Father. Samuel accepted a prayer of relinquishment to his choice, not one
of resignation. He was like Jesus in “the Garden”: not *My* will but
*Yours*be done!
*Hallowed be your :name.*

*2. 16:23 (16:14-23) DAVID: MINISTERS TO SAUL IN MUSIC. “And whenever the
harmful spirit from God was upon Saul, David took the lyre and played it
with his hand. So Saul was refreshed and was well, and the harmful spirit
departed from him.” *Here is demonstrated the power of good music. Here is
also demonstrated the willingness of Jesse to submit to the will of Saul
concerning David. *Your :kingdom come!*

*3. 17:46 (17) DAVID: KILLS GOLIATH. “This day the LORD will deliver you
into my hand, and I will strike you down and cut off your head. And I will
give the dead bodies of the host of the Philistines this day to the birds
of the air and to the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know
that there is a God in Israel.” *Your anointing upon a man makes him bold
for Your Name, Father! *Your :will be done, As in heaven, so on earth!*

*4. 18:3-4 (18:1-5) DAVID: LOVE COVENANT WITH JONATHAN. “Then Jonathan
made a covenant with David, because he loved him as his own soul. 4 And
Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was on him and gave it to David,
and his armor, and even his sword and his bow and his belt.” *Boldness in
Your Name has its own reward, Father! O forgive us our fear of man because
we fail to seek You with all our heart, and become people after Your own
heart! *Our :daily :bread Give us this day.*

*5. 18:8 (18:6-30) DAVID: PERSECUTION FROM SAUL COMMENCES. “And Saul was
very angry, and this saying displeased him. He said, ‘They have ascribed to
David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed thousands, and what more
can he have but the kingdom?’” *The women got David into trouble. A man of
the flesh becomes jealous and fears a man of the Spirit. Unreasonable
persecution becomes the inevitable result. *And forgive us our :debts, As
we also have forgiven our :debtors.*

*6. 19:18 (19) DAVID: PERSECUTED VIOLENTLY BY SAUL. “Now David fled and
escaped, and he came to Samuel at Ramah and told him all that Saul had done
to him. And he and Samuel went and lived at Naioth.” *We are inclined to
play God and take vengeance into our own hands. This is unwise and
unnecessary. *And bring us not into temptation.*

*7. 20:14-15 (20) DAVID: LOVE COVENANT CONFIRMED WITH JONATHAN. “If I am
still alive, show me the steadfast love of the LORD, that I may not
die; 15and do not cut off your steadfast love from my house forever,
when the LORD
cuts off every one of the enemies of David from the face of the earth.” *Thank
You Father, that in the midst of persecution, You raise up a Jonathan to
encourage and strengthen us: even by the son of our persecutor! *But
deliver us from the evil one!*

*NOTE: 20:42a (20) DAVID: JONATHAN’S BLESSING UPON HIM. Then Jonathan said
to David, ‘Go in peace, because we have sworn both of us in the name of the
LORD, saying, “The LORD shall be between me and you, and between my
offspring and your offspring, forever.”’ *This is much like the priestly
blessing upon Israel in Number 6:24-26.

Consider the Sovereignty of our God as it concerns the life of David.
Nothing was unusual about the life of David until God in His Sovereignty sent
Samuel to anoint David as king of Israel. Immediately the Spirit of God
came *upon* him! Immediately he received boldness to kill a lion and a bear
who threatened his father’s sheep - and later Goliath! Immediately he
received the heavenly inspiration to write Psalms unto the Lord.

These anointed Psalms captivated the heart of Charles Spurgeon. When he
finished writing a commentary on each of the Psalms (though David only
wrote but half of them), his heart was saddened - because of the great
blessing he had received during this writing. It was also Spurgeon’s
conviction - as well as that of many others - that David was the author of
Psalm 119. In the “Treasury of David” by Spurgeon, he gives his reason for
this conclusion.

Note also, that the anointing of God upon us brings for the enmity and
persecution of Satan through human beings. He who lies godly in Christ
Jesus - *shall* suffering persecution. It is as sure as night follows day.
And this is the permissive blessing of God - for through the pressure of
persecution, we find ourselves becoming more Christ-like!

Then see the seriousness of “covenant”. Saul did not so consider it. He *
broke* the covenant Joshua made with the Gibeonites - which *God
also*honored. It took David to discover this breach, make it right,
and lift the
famine off of Israel.

The covenant between Jonathan and David - David honored following the
death of Saul and Jonathan. David as king - inquired concerning Jonathan’s
progeny. When he discovered Mephibosheth, son of Jonathan, he treated him
at the king’s table - just as he would have to Jonathan himself. *This* is
covenant. This God would have each of us to understand, and faithfully walk
in covenant also. Our *word* is like a covenant. He that swears to his own
hurt (Psalm 15:4) *and changes not* - is a covenant keeper! Are we too
careful to follow through on our promises? If not, we are promising clouds
- that drop no rain!

*Our Psalm for the day: 146:7b-9 PUT NOT YOUR TRUST IN PRINCES. “The LORD
sets the prisoners free; 8 the LORD opens the eyes of the blind. The LORD
lifts up those who are bowed down; the LORD loves the righteous. 9 The LORD
watches over the sojourners; he upholds the widow and the fatherless, but
the way of the wicked he brings to ruin.” *Not in man, but in *You*, O
Jehovah Father, do we put our trust. There is none other like *You*!* *
