 *APR 27 - JOSHUA 9-12 - LAND OCCUPATION CONTINUED*

 *1. 9:1a-2 (9:1-2) MOBILIZATION OF KINGS WEST OF JORDAN. “As soon as the
kings who were beyond the Jordan in the hill country and in the lowland all
along the coast of the Great Sea toward Lebanon, 2 gathered together as one
to fight against Joshua and Israel” (ESV). *The Canaanites did not give up
their squatter possessions without bitter resistance. But God! * Hallowed
be your :name!*

 *2. 9:14-15 (9:3-27) JOSHUA: OUTWITTED BY GIBEONITES. “So the men took
some of their provisions, but did not ask counsel from the LORD. 15 And
Joshua made peace with them and made a covenant with them, to let them
live, and the leaders of the congregation swore to them.”*

You honored this covenant made by guile (2 SAM 21:1-14). We are *held* to
our word (PSA 15:4b). Teach us to be careful with our words (PRV 6:2). *Your
:kingdom come!*

 *3. 10:14 (10:1-27) JOSHUA: MIRACULOUS DEFENSE OF THE GIBEONITES. “**There
has been no day like it before or since, when the LORD heeded the voice of
a man, for the LORD fought for Israel.” *This is a red letter day and
event! How *mightily* You worked on behalf of Joshua and Israel, Father!
How gratifying after Ai and the Gibeonites! * **Your :will be done, As in
heaven, so on earth.*

 *4. 10:42 (10:28-43) JOSHUA: VICTORIES FROM MAKKEDAH SOUTH. **“And Joshua
captured all these kings and their land at one time, because the LORD God
of Israel fought for Israel.” *This is awesome! Your fear comes upon us, O
great Jehovah Father, in the light of Your mighty acts! There is *no* other
God like You! * Out :daily :bread Give us this day!*

 *5. 11:23 (11:1-23) JOSHUA: VICTORIES FROM MEROM NORTH. **“So Joshua took
the whole land, according to all that the LORD had spoken to Moses. And
Joshua gave it for an inheritance to Israel according to their tribal
allotments. And the land had rest from war.” *What You did for Israel under
Joshua Father, You *now* do for us the Church, the One New Man, under
Jesus! You are conquering the high places in our thought life (2 COR
10:3-4), and bringing them into captivity to Christ! *And forgive us our
:debts, As we also have forgiven our :debtors.*

 *6. 12:6 (12:1-6) CONQUERED KINGS EAST OF JORDAN. **“Moses, the servant of
the LORD, and the people of Israel defeated them. And Moses the servant of
the LORD gave their land for a possession to the Reubenites and the Gadites
and the half-tribe of Manasseh.” *Here is a summary of what happened at the
first. You were faithful here Father, concerning Sihon and Og. *And bring
us not into temptation!*

 *7. 12:7a, 24b (12:7-24) CONQUERED KINGS WEST OF JORDAN. **“And these are
the kings of the land whom Joshua and the people of Israel defeated on the
west side of the Jordan. **24b **In all, thirty-one kings.” *This is really
an overall summary of everything west of Jordan. *Thirty-one* kings, each
representing a particular sin and area of victory we can receive in our
lives! *But deliver us from the evil **one!*

 *NOTE**: 9:19 (9:3-27) THE SERIOUSNESS OF AN OATH! “**But all the leaders
said to all the congregation, ‘We have sworn to them by the LORD, the God
of Israel, and now we may not touch them.’” **This* is the man who You
honor, Father! *“He who swears to his own hurt, **and does not change**!”
(PSA 15:4b). ** *

 The lessons in this reading are helpful indeed! And the part concerning
oaths is of special importance. Our word ofttimes means little in the day
in which we live. Several generations ago there was a saying, “A man’s *word
* is as good as his bond!” Business men often sealed contracts involving
millions of dollars back then - simply on the basis of their spoken word! *
This* is the way *God* is! This is the way He would have us as sons and
daughters to be! This is the way every father and mother should want their
children to be.

 I had dealings with a Christian on one occasion, when my wife and I
suffered because he failed again and again to keep his word. Finally I
confronted him and forced him to explain himself. He said, “I only hold
myself accountable when I have written it down - never by just giving my
word.”

 My response was, “Then my brother, we can have no further dealings with
one another - unless you change this way of doing business.

 And now - our Psalm for the day - *117:* *THE LORD’S FAITHFULNESS ENDURES
FOREVER. **“Praise the LORD, all nations! Extol him, all peoples! **2** For
great is his steadfast love toward us, and the faithfulness of the LORD
endures forever. Praise the LORD.”*
