*MAR 27 - JOHN 13:1-30 - JESUS: HIS SERVANT SPIRIT*
*1. 13:1 JESUS: HIS LOVE UNTO THE END. “Now before the feast of the
passover, :Jesus knowing that his :hour was come for him to depart out of
this :world unto the Father, having loved his :own, those in the world, he
loved them unto the end” (NNT). *We marvel Father, at the love of Your Son
for us, - that in the face of impending death, yet He could prepare them
too! O what love and grace! Yes, we crown Jesus as our King! *Hallowed be
your :name.*
*2. 13:4-5 (13:2-5) JESUS: WASHES HIS DISCIPLES' FEET. “He rises from
:supper, and sets aside his :garments; and he took a towel, and girded
himself. 3 Then he pours water into the basin, and began to wash the feet
of the disciples, and to wipe them with the towel with which he was
girded.” *What an awesome example this must have been to the 12, who had
refused to do this for one another! O Father, we are humbled by the
humility of Jesus! *Your :kingdom come.*
*3. 13:6-7 (13:6-11) JESUS AND PETER. “He comes therefore unto Simon
Peter. He says to him, Lord, do YOU wash MY feet? 7 Jesus answered and said
to him, What I do YOU know not now; but shall understand afterwards.” *How
many things from You Father, we must first do in faith, and only afterwards
receive understanding! O teach us to trust and obey; then we will learn
that You are always the faithful One! *Your :will be done, As in heaven, so
on earth!*
*4. 13:13-15 (13:12-17) JESUS: AN EXAMPLE. “YOU call me the Teacher and
the Lord: and you say well; for I am. 14 If I therefore, the Lord and the
Teacher, have washed YOUR :feet, you also ought to wash the feet of one
another. 15 For I have given you an example, that you also should do even
as I have done to you.” *What a humiliating lesson from the hands of the
Son of God! Father, we would never forget what Jesus has taught us as
disciples here. O forgive us that we so often do forget, and dishonor You
through our selfishness. *Our :daily :bread Give us this day.*
*5. 13:19-20 (13:18-20) JESUS: FORETELLS HIS BETRAYAL. “From henceforth I
tell you before it come to pass, that, when it is come to pass, you may
believe that I am he. 29 Amen, Amen, I say unto you, Who receives whoever I
shall send receives me; and who receives me receives him that sent me.” *Jesus'
foreknowledge of Judas ought to convince us thoroughly that He *was* fully
indwelt by You, Father! He acknowledged that Your Name was in Him. *And
forgive us our :debts, As we also have forgiven our :debtors!*
*6. 13:21 (13:21-27) JESUS: INDICATES HIS BETAYER. “When Jesus had said
these things he was troubled in the spirit, and witnessed, and said, Amen,
Amen, I say unto you, that one of you shall deliver me up.” *How strongly
You had Your Son make this betrayal understood, Father! It is something we
must never forget, for we too will be betrayed for the Son of God's sake.
But forewarned is to be forearmed. *And bring us not into temptation.*
*7. 13:30 (13:28-30) JESUS: PERMITS JUDAS TO GO OUT. “HE then having
received the sop went out straightway: and it was night.” *What a terrible
decision! Woe to the betrayers of the Son of man and his followers! Give us
boldness to winsomely confess Your Son Father, as Lord of lords and King of
kings! *But deliver us from the evil one!*
*NOTE**: 13:8 (13:6-11) JESUS: A SOBER WORD TO PETER. “Peter said to him,
You shall never wash my :feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash you not, you
have no part with me.” *We must humble ourselves to permit Your Son Father,
to do those things for us that we cannot do ourselves. Only HE can cleanse
us and set us free!
Washing feet for guests - was a normal and necessary custom in the Middle
East in Jesus' day. It was something one of Jesus' disciples should have
volunteered to do because of such a custom. That they forced Jesus to do
what one of them should have done, was *most embarrassing*.
Today some make a necessary custom of that time and place, something we
must do today. This is probably something in line with having Gentile
believers follow all the OT Jewish customs - being Torah Observant. It is
true that in OT times Gentiles living with Jews in Israel were required to
live like Jews if they were to partake of such Feasts as Passover. But
Gentiles *not* living in Israel who were interested in Judaism, were
*not*required to keep the full Torah. Then when Jesus as Son of man
came, men
like Paul, the apostle to Gentiles, protected Gentile believers from the
necessity of becoming Torah Observant. *Only* the 4 requirements of the
latter part of Acts 15 became obligatory.
I see foot-washing in this same category. For those still living in the
Middle East - yes- such a custom should not be overlooked. But to require
it as a religious necessity out of that environment - no - such should not
be obligatory. However - any who voluntarily choose to adopt such a custom
for special occasions - no sin.
And now - our Psalm for the day: *87:5-6 (87:1-7) GLORIOUS THINGS OF YOU
ARE SPOKEN! And of Zion is shall be said, “This one and that one were born
in her”; for the Most High himself will establish her. 6 The LORD records
as he registers the peoples, “This one was born there” (ESV). *Jesus, for
the travail of His soul for us, shall be satisfied. Out of Zion have we
been spiritually conceived and birthed by Your will O Father, by an
incorruptible seed! You have prepared us as the bride of the Lamb. *Hallowed
be your :name!*
