*JAN 4 - GENESIS 3 - ADAM AND THE FALL*

*1. 3:4-5 (3:1-5) THE TEMPTATION. “And the serpent said unto the woman, You
shall not surely die: 5 For God knows that in the day you eat of it, then
your eyes shall be opened, and you shall be as God, knowing good and evil.”
(ASV '01) *What a lie! What deception and delusion! What a murderer! To eat
of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil is to bring immediate
spiritual death. God can give us discernment in this area. *Hallowed be Your
Name!*

*2. 3:7 (3:6-7) THE FALL. “And the eyes of both of them were opened, and
they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig-leaves together, and made
themselves girdles.” *What a tragedy! O the tragic result of deception and
sin! Ichabod: Your Glory Father, immediately departed! Revelation from a
source apart from You, even though appearing *good*, is a snare. *Your
:kingdom come.*

*3. 3:11 (3:8-13) THE TRIAL. “And Jehovah God said, Who told you that you
were naked? Have you eaten of the tree, of which I commanded you that you
should not eat?” Innocence* is *not* enough. We must be tested Father, at
the point where You gave commandment. Character in true personality only
slays carnal individuality when we choose aright in the midst of testing. *Your
:will be done, As in heaven, so on earth.*

*4. 3:16 (3:14-19) THE SENTENCE. “Unto the woman God said, I will greatly
multiply your pain and your conception; in pain you shall bring forth
children; and your desire shall be to your husband, and he shall rule over
you.” * O the tragedy of deception, disobedience and sin! To this day Eve
experiences in her sex the bitterness and difficulty of this judgment. And
Adam even more shared judgment because of his clearer awareness in his sin.
We should never doubt the integrity of God's word! Yet - *Our :daily bread
Give us this day.*

*5. 3:20 EVE. “And the man called his wife's name Eve; because she was the
mother of all living.” *Though Adam's image was marred, yet remnants of what
he lost remained. We bear this marred image also, but thanks to You Father,
we are now *new creations* in formation in Christ Jesus! *And forgive us our
:debts, as we also have forgiven our :debtors.*

*6. 3:21 CLOTHING. “And Jehovah God made for Adam and for his wife coats of
skins, and clothed them.” *It took the shedding of blood to provide covering
for Adam and Eve. It took Christ's blood to provide a robe of righteousness
for New Covenant saints. Thanks be unto God for this Redemptive Act! *And
bring us not into temptation!*

*7. 3:24 (3:22-24) SENTENCE ENACTED. “So God drove out the man; and he
placed at the east of the garden of Eden the Cherubim, and the flame of a
sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.” *What
mercy is this, Father! Until Christ came, the true Tree of Life, You dared
not allow us to eat of Eden's tree of life. How wise and marvelous are Your
ways! *But deliver us from the evil one!*

*NOTE**: *Genesis 3 is one of the saddest chapters of the Bible from our
point of view. “But from God's insight, we as members of Adam's race - *in
the end* turn out better than even if Adam had *not* sinned. From the
Redemption that is in Christ Jesus, we now through identification with His
death, burial and resurrection - end up in His image, *far above* what Adam
in a sinless state would have become.

See Romans 8:31-39. Here we discover the tremendous blessings on our
behalf, because of the “Finished Work” of Christ Jesus our Lord. It behooves
us to maintain our *gaze* upon Him, not just a glance! Our *focus* upon
Jesus is the secret of an overcoming life. We start out this way like the
church of Ephesus (Revelation 2:1-7) - but apart from our focus upon Him, we
like Ephesus can soon depart from our first love!

On April 2nd I was reading “My Utmost for His Highest” by Oswald Chambers -
for part of my daily devotions. He entitles this reading “The Glory That's
Unsurpassed,” linked with Acts 9:17 - “the Lord Jesus ... has sent me that
you may receive your sight ... ”

When Paul received his sight, he also received spiritual insight into the
Person of Jesus Christ. His entire life and preaching from that point on
were totally consumed with nothing but Jesus Christ - “For I determined not
to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified: (1
Corinthians 2:2). Paul never again allowed anything to attract and hold the
attention of his mind and soul except the face of Jesus Christ.

We must learn to maintain a strong degree of character in our lives, even
to the level that has been revealed in our vision of Jesus Christ.

The lasting characteristic of a spiritual man is the ability to understand
correctly the meaning of the Lord Jesus Christ in his life, and the ability
to explain the purposes of God to others. The overruling passion of his life
is Jesus Christ. Whenever you see this quality in a person, you get the
feeling that he is truly a man after God's own heart (see Acts 13:22).

Never allow anything to divert you from your insight into Jesus Christ. It
is the true test of whether you are spiritual or not. To be unspiritual
means that other things have a growing fascination for you.

*Since mine eyes have looked on Jesus,*

*I've lost sight of all beside;*

*So enchained my spirit's vision,*

*Gazing on the Crucified.*

(I put a concluding note years ago to the above - Madame Jeanne Guyon and
Oswald Chambers are of the same spirit. J.A.W.)
