*URIM & THUMMIM - TRUE GUIDANCE*

 *NOTE:** *In 1944, between Passover and Pentecost - 50 days - I read the
Bible completely through in 6 weeks. It was not a noble endeavor, but mostly
out of curiosity.


 I had joined the Canadian Navy in June of 1943 by direct commandment of the
Lord, though at the time I did not know Him personally. He spoke to me in
the Fall of 1942 from Psalm 107:23-24, for I did read the Bible because of a
Bible Quiz habit. He said, “Join the Navy, and I'll reveal Myself to you.”
So I did, and 9 months later, He did!


 I had a call to the ministry before I was saved, and now that He had
revealed Himself to me, I wanted to know what I had got myself into by
promising Him to preach and teach His Son and the Bible. A number of
surprises came to me from parts of the Bible I had not read before. One was
Exodus 28:6-30. Here God tells Moses how to clothe his brother Aaron as High
Priest. One part of his clothing was to attach the Breastplate of Judgment
to the Ephod, with 2 gold chains and a blue ribbon. Inside of the
rectangular Breastplate folded into a square pocket, was placed the Urim and
Thummim (“Lights and Perfection”). By this the High Priest could by God give
“Perfect Guidance” to Kings and leaders of Israel. Joshua and David
especially made good use of this supernatural method of “Perfect Guidance.”
Twice just after David became joint king of both Judah and Israel at the age
of 37, the Philistines came up against him early in his reign, thinking they
could defeat him at this early stage. Both times however he consulted God
through Urim and Thummim. The first time God directed him to the successful
defeat of the Philistines in battle. The second time He directed David to
divide his forces and make an ambush; keep his main force under the mulberry
trees; and when he heard God's angels go in to defeat the Philistines, then
he was to move and mop up. What a way to win battles!


 Somehow or other God revealed to me that the Urim and Thummim had a New
Testament application for every Christian. I dearly desired to know how to
access this gift.


 Now see the passage in Exodus 28:6-30, ASV '01, that God first quickened to
me. *“And they shall make the ephod of gold, of blue, and purple, scarlet
and fine twined linen, the work of the skillful workman. **7** It shall have
two shoulder-pieces joined to the two ends of it, that it may be joined
together. **8** And the skilfully woven band, which is upon it, by which to
gird it on, shall be like the work of it **and** of the same piece; of gold,
of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen. **9** And you shall
take two onyx stones, and graven on them the names of the children of Israel
(Jacob): **10** six of their names on the one stone, and the names of the
six that remain on the other stone, **according to their birth**.
**11**With the work of an engraver in stone, like the engravings of a
signet,
shall you engrave the two stones, according to the names of the children of
Israel: you shall make them to be enclosed in settings of gold. **12** And
you shall put the two stones upon the shoulder-pieces of the ephod, to be
stones of memorial for the children of Israel: and Aaron shall bear their
names before Jehovah upon his two shoulders for a memorial. **13** And you
shall make settings of gold, **14** and two chains of pure gold; like cords
shall you make them, of wreathen work: and you shall put the wreathen chains
on the settings.*


 *15** And you shall make a **breastplate of judgment**, the work of the
skillful workman; like the work of the ephod you shall make it; of gold, of
blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen, shall you make it. **
16** Foursquare it shall be **and** double; a span shall be the length of
it, and a span the breadth of it. **17** And you shall set in it settings of
stones, four rows of stones: a row of sardis, topaz, and carbuncle shall be
the first row; **18 **and the second row an emerald, a sapphire, and a
diamond; **19** and the third row a jacinth, an agate, and an amethyst; **20
** and the fourth row a beryl, and an onyx, and a jasper: they shall be
enclosed in gold in their settings. **21** And the stones shall be according
to the names of the children of Israel, twelve, according to their names;
like the engravings of a signet, every one according to his name, they shall
be **for the twelve tribes.** **22** And you shall make upon the breastplate
chains like cords of wreathen work of pure gold. **23** And you shall make
upon the breastplate two rings of gold, and shall put the two rings on the
two ends of the breastplate. **24** And you shall put the two wreathen
chains of gold in the two rings at the ends of the breastplate. **25** And
the **other** two ends of the two wreathen chains you shall put on the two
settings, and put them on the shoulder-pieces of the ephod in the forepart
of it. **26** And you shall make two rings of gold, and you shall put them
upon the two ends of the breastplate, upon the edge of it, which is toward
the side of the ephod inward. **27** And you shall make two rings of gold,
and shall put them on the two shoulder-pieces of the ephod underneath, in
the forepart of it, close to the coupling of it, above the skillfully woven
band of the ephod. **28** And they shall bind the breastplate by the rings
of it unto the rings of the ephod with a lace of blue, that it may be upon
the skillfully woven bond of the ephod, and that the breastplate be not
loosed from the ephod. **29** And Aaron shall bear the names of the children
of Israel in the breastplate of judgment **upon his heart**, when he goes in
unto the holy place, for a memorial before Jehovah **continually**.
**30**And you shall put in the breastplate of judgment
**the Urim and the Thummim; and they shall be upon Aaron's heart, when he
goes in before Jehovah; and Aaron shall bear the judgment of the children of
Israel upon his heart before Jehovah continually.*


 After understanding that there was a New Testament Application for this
unusual gift, I sought preachers and books to help me understand how to
enter into this blessing. No dice! Then I remembered that I had been paper
boy at 15 for 3 years to Mrs. Mary Bertha Allquist of Port Alberni, BC.
Though I was an unbeliever at the time, I understood that she was a Jewish
convert to Christianity, and had memorized the entire Bible, much of it in
Hebrew also. I sensed that she was the answer to my problem. So the first
leave I had from the Navy, I hitch-hiked from Victoria to Port Alberni,
visited Mrs. Allquist, and presented to her my problem.


 With a big smile on her face, she said, “*Turn with me to Proverbs 6:20-23,
and read to me.” *As I read, she quietly quoted from memory along with me.
As you can note, this passage at the beginning of this paper,
*exactly*corresponds with the Exodus 28:6-30 passage. How Solomon
described the
father's command to his son, and the mother's teaching - like the Urim and
Thummim - is bound over the heart, and tied about the neck like the
Breastplate of Judgment on the High Priest. The two opal shoulder stones to
which the 2 gold chains were attached record the names of the 12 sons of
Jacob according to birth (Genesis 29 & 30). But the 12 stones on the
Breastplate recorded the 12 tribes of Israel according to Numbers 1, and
their location around the Tabernacle of Moses.


 Apparently when the High Priest consulted God through Urim & Thummim on
behalf of men like Joshua and David, a prophetic word came forth - giving
exact guidance for the request made.


 When you and I follow God's word to Joshua in 1:8, and to David in Psalm 1,
and Timothy in 1 Timothy 4:15, our *verbal meditation* over the Word
transforms it from a written LOgos word into a *living RHEma word*. As we
hear and *do* this word, our way to *prosperity*, and all we do, becomes *
successful*.

 That same year, 1944, God put into my hands George Muller's “Answers to
Prayer.” The 6 points of his Preface on how to infallibly attain the will of
God - is a parallel passage to Urim & Thummim, and can be successfully
accessed by vocally praying over the Scriptures. Here are Muller's 6 points:
1. Have *no* preconceived ideas, Proverbs 3:5-6 (3:1-12). This is the most
difficult of all 6 points to achieve, and leads 90% towards success. 2. Do *
not* leave the result to feeling or simple impression, for it will lead to
sure deception - Remember Isaac feeling Jacob in Genesis 27. 3. Seek the
Will of God by the Spirit of God *through* or *in connection with* the Word
of God - Romans 8:14 (8:12-17). 4. Providence - Revelation 3:7 (3:7-13). 5.
Ask God to reveal His Word aright! - Matthew 7:7 (7:1-12). 6. Let peace be
your referee, and let it remain after 2 or 3 askings - Colossians 3:15
(3:12-17). (Praying in the Spirit over the Word of God as well - was Smith
Wigglesworth's secret of success.)


 I have walked this way now for 65 years, and I can assuredly avouch for the
unusual insights God gave me that year. Again and again when the enemy has
come in like a flood while I have been pastoring churches - God by His
Spirit has given a clear word of direction, raised up a standard against the
enemy, and given the parallel kind of victories that both Joshua and David
as well as others, experienced.


 God is no respecter of persons. What Joshua, David, myself and others have
experienced - is a possibility for you too. When you search for God with *
all* your heart - you shall *surely* find Him.


 I gave myself *fully* to the Lord at Passover 1944 - to preach Him and His
Word without compromise. I fear I have not always been as faithful as I
would like - but by His grace I have tried to let Him *always* have His
perfect way through me. *He* has always been faithful, but unfortunately at
times, His channel in me has been somewhat cloudy. Pray for me, as Paul
requested prayer in Ephesians 6, that like him I might speak God's word *
boldly* at all times as I ought to speak.


 God asked me at one time - “Would you be willing, if it were My will, to
die a martyr for me?” I assured Him, that by His grace, I would. I do not
know if He will ask that of me, but I am willing.


 My prayer for each of you: that God's NT Urim & Thummim equivalent will be
as real for you as it has been for me the last 65 years. And remember -
Proverbs 6:20-23 doesn't promise *just guidance*, but also *safety during
sleep*, and *communion with God speaking to us during the day!* What a
blessing. I have found the 3-fold blessing to be a reality and through
dreams and visions have experienced the fullness of this blessing!


 PS. As an aside, the first Wednesday of August, 1982 at the First Baptist
Church of Arcata CA when I was serving for 6 years there as Associate
Pastor, Pastor Jack Hayford of Van Nuys CA spoke as our guest speaker.
Normally we had maybe 13 in attendance. That night, 600 attended! An
overflow room of 120 met downstairs with closed circuit television, and kids
sat around the pulpit on the floor beside Pastor Jack. His text was from
Exodus 28:17-21.


 His father from Oakland CA was reading this Scripture portion in 1969. God
spoke to him: *“My son - if you will take Judah's name off the red sardius
stone, and replace it with your clan name of “Hayford;” and if you will take
Issachar's name off the yellow topaz stone and replace it with your wife's
maiden name of “Smith;” and if you will with your wife pray for these 2 clan
names twice daily - I will make an effective witness to every member of
these 2 clans world-wide - and those of open heart - I will bring into My
Kingdom.”*


 His wife agreed with him for this challenge. Within 6 months 4 Hayfords and
2 Smiths up till then unknown to them, made contact - and were all found to
be newly brought into God's Kingdom in this time-frame. Mr Hayford Sr. died
10 years later, 1979. For 3 years his widow continued the prayer project.
Then she shared with her son Jack of their project. *“Why Mom,” *he asked, *did
Dad never tell me of this?” “O you know your Dad, son, as a layman he felt
if God showed it to him, how much more would every preacher know of it? Why
waste your time, son?” *


 Pastor Jack had not previously run across such a revelation. He did a
careful Bible study on “Clan Salvation,” and found it entirely scriptural.
He determined if he had only a one night stand to preach, and neither the
Holy Spirit nor the host pastor asked otherwise, he would *always* preach on
“Clan Salvation.” That was his message for us the first Wednesday of August
1982.


 I was so impressed, that next morning, as my wife Marie and I knelt in
prayer, I prayed for all the “Watt” clan, and all the “Gaudet” clan - my
wife's maiden name. But I'm Scottish in my background and thought - *“What a
shame to leave unused all the other 10 stones on the breastplate!” * So I
added my mother's maiden name Mosher, the clan names of the spouses of our 3
children, the spouse clan names of brothers and sisters of my wife and
myself - and by the time I ended, I had to add 6 more stones to the
Breastplate of Judgment!


 A few results of this prayer: 16 months later Marie found her heritage back
6 generation in Manitoba on her mother's parents side, and a lost brother of
75 years on her father's side, and some 40 or more of her relatives brought
into the Kingdom of God. I had similar results, but not as startling.


 So - not only *“Perfect Guidance”* through a spiritual “Urim and Thummim”
comes out of this passage - but *“Clan Salvation”* that many times over,
eclipses “Household Salvation!” - Jim Watt
