*NOTE*: This is a “Father's Day” Passage and Message. I received it
sometime around 1979 at the “Word of God Community,” Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Just as Proverbs 31:10-31 is a Mother's Day Message for the honor given the
ideal mother by her children and husband - so Job 29:1-25 is for a Father
and Husband as honored by his wife, 10 children, and both young and old in
the gate of the city.
This is the position Boaz held in the city of Bethlehem. Here he became
husband of Ruth and great grandfather of King David.
Just as it takes children and husband to give honor to a virtuous woman, so
it takes children, wife and leaders to give honor to a worthy father, elder
and husband.
Of course - Job went through one of the most severe testings possible for
any man. It fits perfectly into the sixth portion of the Lord's Prayer. Here
Jesus taught His disciples to pray - “Our Father, who art in heaven - if it
be possible to perfect me and bring me into the image of Jesus, please let
me not suffer undue testing. However, if in Your judgment testing - even
severe - is necessary to bring me as a son into Your Glory - then Your will
be done. Just please make sure that Satan gains no advantage over me during
the time of such testing,”
God definitely answered this prayer for Job. He *did* allow Satan to
severely test Job in two dimensions. But He brought Job through to a
position where a formerly good man was made “much better!”
This is also much in accord with the verb tenses of the Lord's Prayer on
our behalf. For of the 7 petitions that Jesus gave us in this prayer, six
are commands in the imperative mood. But *not* the sixth request. “Lead us
not into testing,” is in the subjunctive mood, leaving it up to God whether
He deems it necessary or not to permit us like Job to go through fiery
testing! But - just as He brought Job through to a greater and higher
position of intimacy with Him - so - because He is no respecter of persons -
He will also protect us from the deep, evil desires of Satan, and safely
bring us like Job into His safe haven at last.
May wives, children, friends, fellow leaders - be faithful on the behalf of
all fathers - to bring us by God through their prayers - into a similar
rightful and fruitful result as He did for Job.
The only book I ever saw my father read was the book of Job. A worthy
choice!
One of the first books Oswald Chambers published was the Book of Job -
entitled - “Baffled to Fight Better.” All fathers would do well to read not
only the book of Job, but also Oswald Chambers commentary upon it.
Testing *is* Baffling! There is no doubt about it. But - in God's
inscrutable Wisdom - it is *always* right when He permits it.
Here is a further insight from a somewhat similar perspective from George
Muller - “It pleased the Lord to lead me to see a higher standard of
devotedness than I had seen before. He led me, in a measure, to see what is
my true glory in this world, even to be despised, and to be poor and mean
with Christ. I saw then, in a measure, though I have seen it more fully
since, that it ill becomes the servant to seek to be rich, and great, and
honored in this world where his Lord was poor, and mean, and despised.” The
apostle Paul and George Muller saw much alike in this respect. John Wesley
also walked in this same spirit.
God bless all fathers in this critical upcoming Father's Day of 2009! - Jim
