*NOV 14 - 1 TIMOTHY 2-3 - COUNSEL TO MEN, WOMEN AND LEADERS*

*1. 2:1-2 (2:1-7, NNT) PRAYER: TO BE MADE FOR ALL MEN. “I exhort therefore
first of all to make supplications, prayers, intercessions, thanksgivings,
for all men; 2 for kings and all that are in high places; that we may lead
a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and gravity.” *Father, we
recognize Your Government through secular leaders, and pray and thank You
for them, including all men. Your Government in Christ is *Good News*.
*Hallowed
be your :name.*

*2. 2:8 PRAYER: ATTITUDE OF HEART REQUIRED. “I desire therefore the men to
pray in every place, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and disputings.” *Men
is generic here, including all men and women: the human race. Father, we
note that You have made prayer an outflow of the heart, taking precedence
over the head! *Your :kingdom come!*

*3. 2:11-12 (2:9-15) WOMEN: THEIR ADORNMENT AND STATUS. “Let a woman learn
in quietness with all subjection. 12 But I permit not a woman to teach, nor
to have dominion over a man, but to be in quietness.” *That is, silence
concerning authority over man, but not silence in prayer, prophecy,
exhortation, sharing, etc., for these are also mentioned in Scripture. Give
us balance, Father! *Your :will be done, As in heaven, so on earth.*

*4. 3:4-5 (3:1-7) OVERSEERS: QUALIFICATIONS. “Ruling well his own :house,
having children in subjection with all gravity; 5 (but if one knows not how
to rule his own :house, how shall he care for God’s church?)” *As a father
to his family, so is an overseer (elder, shepherd) to his flock (local
church); as a husband to a wife, so is a pastor to his board (leaders); as
parents to their family, so is a pastor and leaders to their church.
Forgive us Father, for forgetting this analogy, and that the family
*first*came, then the church!
*Our :daily :bread Give us this day!*

*5. 3:12-13 (3:8-13) DEACONS AND WIVES: QUALIFICATIONS. “Let deacons be
husbands of one wife, ruling the children and their own :houses well. 13 For
who have served well as deacons gain to themselves a good standing, and
great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.” *This is a high
calling. Seven deacons looked after the entire city church of Jerusalem,
with its many home churches. *And forgive us our :debts, As we also have
forgiven our :debtors.*

*6. 3:14-15. THESE RULES: FOR GOD’S HOUSE, THE CHURCH. “These things I
write to you, hoping to come unto you shortly; 15 but if I delay that you
know how one should behave in God’s house, the which is the living God’s
church, pillar and ground of the truth.” *This is the Mystery of mysteries!
*And bring us not into temptation.*

*7. 3:16. MYSTERY OF GODLINESS: GOD IN JESUS. “And confessedly great is
the mystery of :godliness; Who was manifested in the flesh, Justified
in thespirit, Seen of angels, Preached among nations, Believed on in
the world, Received up in glory.” *This is the Mystery of mysteries! *But
deliver us from the evil one!*

*NOTE**: 2:5 (2:1-7) THE UNIQUE POSITION OF JESUS! **“For one is God, one
is also mediator between God and men, a man, Christ Jesus.” *We accept Your
way of doing things, Father. Salvation and Reconciliation comes in *no
other way* than through Jesus Christ. There is *no other way* under heaven
given among men, whereby we must be saved. *Narrow* is the gate, and *
straitened* is the way which leads to life, and *few* there be who find it.

*Quote from Paul Washer - “You may say, ‘God doesn’t hate anybody. God is
love.’ No, my friend. You need to understand something. Jesus Christ
taught, the prophets taught, the apostles taught this: that apart from the
grace of God revealed in Jesus Christ our Lord the only thing left for you
is the wrath, the fierce anger of God because of your rebellion and your
sin.”*

*Our chapter from Proverbs for the Day: 5:1-2 (5, ESV) WARNING AGAINST
ADULTERY. “My son, be attentive to my wisdom; incline your ear to my
understanding, 2 that you may keep discretion, and your lips may guard
knowledge.” *Ponder the wisdom of God here through Solomon. Solomon heard
these words through his father David, but failed to heed them in his old
age. We all need to ponder this!

5:15-23. Solomon, having shown the great evil that there is in adultery
and fornication, prescribes remedies against them 1. Enjoy with
satisfaction the comforts of lawful marriage, which was ordained for the
prevention of uncleanness. Let none complain that God has dealt unkindly
with them in forbidding them those pleasures which they have a natural
desire of, for he has graciously provided for the regular gratification of
them. “You may not indeed eat of every tree of the garden, but choose out
one, which you please, and of that you may freely eat; nature will be
content with them, but lust with nothing.” Let young men marry, marry and
not burn. Have a *cistern, a well of your own (5:15), *even the wife *of
your youth, 5:18. Wholly abstain, or wed. - *Herbert. Let him that is
married take delight in his wife, and let him be very fond of her, not only
because she is the wife that he himself has chosen and he ought to be
pleased with his own choice, but because she is the wife that God in his
providence appointed for him. *Let your fountain be blessed (5:18);** *think
yourself very happy in her, look upon her as a blessed wife, let her have
your blessing, pray daily for her, and then *rejoice with her*. Mutual
delight is the bond of mutual fidelity. Let him be fond of his wife and
love her dearly (5:19). If you will suffer your love to run into an excess,
let it be only of your own wife. Let him take delight in his children and
look upon them with pleasure (5:16-17). Let him then scorn the offer of
forbidden pleasures when he is *always ravished with the love *of a
faithful virtuous wife; let him consider what an absurdity it will be for
him to be *ravished with a strange woman (5:20). *If the dictates of reason
may be heard, the laws of virtue will be obeyed. *(From “Matthew Henry’s
Commentary in One Volume” - Zondervan)*
