 *JUL 4 - PROVERBS 8-9 - WISDOM’S CALL*

 *1. 8:7 (8:1-11, ESV) WISDOM’S APPEAL. “For my mouth will utter truth;
wickedness is an abomination to my lips.” *Father, You are the God of
truth! Jesus, You *are* the Truth. Lawlessness and rebellion have no part
in You, nor in Your servants. As King, Lord Jesus, burn out of our hearts
by Your baptism of fire, the last root of rebellion. *Hallowed be your
:name.*

*2. 8:13 (8:12-21) WISDOM AND ITS EXCELLENCE. “The fear of the LORD is
hatred of evil. Pride and arrogance and the way of evil and perverted
speech I hate.” *Burn these truths, O Lord, into our heart. Impart unto us
Your Divine Nature by Your great and exceeding precious promises. Yes,
Lord; we will say “Yes” to You. We release You completely to take over our
lives (Romans 12:1-2; Mark 8:34). *Your :kingdom come!*

*3. 8:30 (8:22-31) WISDOM: ITS ETERNITY. “Then I was beside him, like a
master workman, and I was daily his delight, rejoicing before him
always.” *Lord
Jesus, we see You in Your pre-incarnate state with the Father. “Before
Abraham was, I AM!” O Father, how can we doubt Your daily provision when we
are in You, and Christ is in us? With contrite heart, we loose You in
completeness to have Your way in us. *Your :will be done, As in heaven, so
on earth.*

*4. 8:35 (8:32-36) WISDOM: AN EXHORTATION TO HEED. “For whoever finds me
finds life and obtains favor from the LORD.” *Life for our spirit in the
new birth; life for us now in our souls; life in fullness in our body at
the resurrection: past, present and future, for all Your mature sons and
daughters. This humbles us - first realizing we must deliberately,
voluntarily, sacrificially and *joyfully* grant forgiveness to all. *Our
:daily :bread Give us this day.*

*5. 9:1-2 (9:1-6) WISDOM’S INVITATION. “Wisdom has built her house; she
has hewn her seven pillars. 2 She has slaughtered her beasts; she has mixed
her wine; she has also set her table.” *And what O Jehovah, are wisdom’s 7
pillars, her foundations? Surely the foundations, the first principles, the
milk of Hebrews 6:1-2: repentance, faith, baptisms, laying on hands,
resurrection, judgment - and on to maturity. No house can be built without
these 7 foundational pillars. And who builds us upon these? The ministries
of Ephesians 4:11-12 adjust (ka-tarTIz*o*) us and mature us unto the
functioning of our respective ministries. Now we are equipped, and have on
the armor of our Lord Jesus to face testing! *And forgive us our :debts, As
we also have forgiven our :debtors.*

*6. 9:10 (9:7-12) WISDOM’S PROOF AND DEFINITION. “The fear of the LORD is
the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is
insight.” * Father,
grant to each of Your children wisdom and understanding in abundance.
Theyare already in us in Christ! We loose them into fullness and
maturity!
Come, Lord Jesus, increase while we decrease. By this, a hedge of thorns is
about us like Job. *And bring us not into temptation.*

 *7. 9:18 (9:13-18) THE FOOLISH WOMAN’S INVITATION: WISDOM’S OPPOSITE! “But
he does not know that the dead are there, that her guests are in the depths
of Sheol.” *Adultery and fornication give entrance to Satanic spirits. They
are doorways to the spirit of hell. By them we sin against our own body,
the temple of the Holy Spirit. Father, save us from such presumptuous sin. *But
deliver us from the one!*

*NOTE**: *How important these two chapters! Let us receive You in Your
fullness, Lord Jesus, God’s incarnate Wisdom. We release You within
ourselves in fullness as our wisdom, made such unto us by God (1
Corinthians 1:30). How precious is Your Word; and You and Your Word are *one
*! (John 1:1).

*Our Psalm for the day: 4:8 (4) ANSWER ME WHEN I CALL. “In peace I will
both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety.” *O
Jehovah Father, our everlasting Covenant God, we learn continually to lean
harder upon You. Let us lean harder on You, Jesus; Yes harder, Lord, each
day. Then lost in Your great love, praise wells up unbidden from our
hearts. For You instruct us with dreams in the night season. *Hallowed be
your :name!*

If the Third Psalm may be entitled The Morning Psalm, this from its matter
is equally deserving of the title of “The Evening Hymn.” In the first
verse, David pleads with God for help. In the second, he expostulates with
his enemies, and continues to address them to the end of verse 5. Then from
verse 6 to the close, he delightfully contrasts his own satisfaction and
safety with the disquietude of the ungodly in their best estate. C. H. S.

4:3 *The Lord has set apart him that is godly for Himself.* David was king
by Divine decree, and we are the Lord’s people in the same manner; let us
tell our enemies to their faces that they fight against God and destiny
when they strive to overthrow our souls. C. H. S.

4:4 *Commune with your own heart upon your bed, and be still.* “Tremble
and sin not.” How many reverse this counsel and sin but tremble not. Oh
that men would take the advice of this verse and *commune with their own
hearts. *C. H. S.

4:7 *You have put gladness in my heart, more than in the time that their
corn and their wine increased.* “It is better,” said one, “to feel God’s
favor one hour in our repenting souls than to sit whole ages under the
warmest sunshine that this world affords.” Christ in the heart is better
than corn in the barn or wine in the vat. Corn and wine are but fruits of
the world, but the light of God’s countenance is the ripe fruit of heaven.
Let my granary be empty, I am yet full of blessings if Jesus Christ smiles
upon me; but if I have all the world, I am poor without him.

This verse is the saying of the righteous man in opposition to the saying
of the many. How quickly does the tongue betray the character! “Speak, that
I may see you!” said Socrates to a fair boy. The metal of a bell is best
known by its sound. Birds reveal their nature by their song. C. H. S.

4:8 *I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for You, Lord, only
makes me dwell in safety*. A quiet conscience is a good bedfellow. How many
of our sleepless hours might be traced to our untrusting and disordered
minds! They slumber sweetly whom faith rocks to sleep. No pillow so soft as
a promise; no coverlet so warm as an assured interest in Christ. C. H.
Spurgeon - from “The Treasury of David”, abridgment - by David Otis Fuller
