*WEEK 35 - AUG 26-SEP 1 - GALATIANS - DEFENSE OF JUSTIFICATION BY FAITH*
*AUG 26**. 1:8 (1:1-9, NNT-IP) LIBERTY: THREATENED BY FALSE
GOSPELS.**“But though we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to
you a gospel
other than what we preached to you, let him be anathema.”** * We are saved
by grace through faith alone apart from works. Yet true grace always
produces the true fruit of works! Yet whoever perverts this Gospel of the
Kingdom, let him be accursed. Hallowed be your :name.
*AUG 27. 1:10 (1:10-2:21) PAUL'S GOSPEL. “For am I now seeking men's
favor, or :God's? or am I seeking to please men? if I were still pleasing
men, I should not be Christ's bondman.” *Paul was a living epistle for Your
glory, Father. Like Jesus, he spoke the word of the Gospel as it is in
truth without fear of man, nor with respect of persons, but in the fear of
God! *Your :kingdom come.*
*AUG 28. 3:1 (3:1-6) THE HOLY SPIRIT AND FAITH. “O foolish Galatians, who
bewitched you, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was openly set forth
crucified?” *Seduction, deception and delusion lead us to listen to another
spirit apart from the Holy Spirit. The witch of Endor did this for King
Saul. Satan does it today through the spirit of cults. But we, O Lord,
cleave to You and Your Word. *Your :will be done, As in heaven, so on earth.
*
*AUG 29. 3:13-14 (3:7-4:7) TWO CONTRASTS. “Christ redeemed us from the
curse of the law, having become a curse for us; because it is written,
Accursed every one hanging on a tree: 24 that unto the nations might come
the blessing of Abraham in Christ Jesus; that we might receive the promise
of the Spirit through :faith.” *Law bondage, Judaizing and legalism
according to man's traditions - we resist and put from us, O Lord. Jesus
died to deliver us from such bondage. * Our :daily :bread Give us this day.*
*AUG 30. 5:1 (4:8-5:12) LOVE-SERVICE ENDS LAW-BONDAGE. “For freedom did
Christ set us free: stand fast therefore, and be not entangled again in a
yoke of bondage.” *The words and commandments of Jesus and His apostles are
not legalism and law-bondage. They are an expression of the outworking of
God's grace! Judaizing and man's traditions and such-like are bondage - a
Galatian heresy! *And forgive us our :debts, As we also have forgiven our
:debtors. *
*AUG 31. 5:13 (5:13-6:10) A SPIRIT-WALK TRIUMPHS OVER A FLESH-WALK. “For
you, brethren, were called for freedom; only use not the freedom for an
occasion to the flesh, but through love be bondmen one to another.” *Does
your free grace lead you into licentiousness? God forbid! Else we claim a
false grace and pervert the gospel of the grace of God through seduction! *And
bring us not into temptation.*
*SEP 1. 6:14 (6:11-18) FINAL DOCTRINAL APPEAL. “But far be it from me to
glory, save in the cross of our :Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world
has been crucified to me, and I to the world.” *O Father, in the cross of
Jesus we glory. Here all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ
find their basis! *But deliver us from the evil one.*
*NOTE**: *Liberty is only through the gospel! This is the recurring them
of Galatians. We need to know the Word of God thoroughly! We need to trust
the Holy Spirit to supply it and lead us in guidance. In the law of the
Spirit of life in Christ Jesus, we shall be kept free from legalistic
bondage!
Lying signs and wonders are predicted by Jesus for the last days. An
angelic revelation does *not* prove that God has spoken. *Only* revelation
that lines up with the Word of God, whether given by angel or prophet, will
pass God’s test!
Five times in the New Testament the apostle Paul gives his testimony, and
this is the fourth time. Notice how carefully he documents it, so that
others may verify it. Though Paul had love, yet he balanced it with truth
in word and deed!
The Galatian churches started by faith, and the miracles came by the Holy
Spirit through faith, not works of law. The Holy Spirit Himself comes by
faith, not by merit. Abraham initiated the faith-walk.
Paul here carefully shows that the walk of faith was instituted *prior* to
the giving of the law. He used the analogy of a schoolmaster to illustrate
the function of law. The walk of the Spirit frees one from law-walk,
placing us into faith-walk.
As Ishmael is to Hagar, so Isaac is to Sarah. Sarah is a picture of the
New Jerusalem, our mother. We are born of this free mother, not of Hagar,
of the law of bondage of Jerusalem below. Travail in prayer by others frees
us from law-bondage. We must maintain this freedom!
We are walking in the flesh if we are striving to be justified by works of
the law alone. Put the carriage before the horse? By no means! Faith in
Christ’s death and resurrection is the horse. The carriage is good works of
thanksgiving that follow.
Persecution arises for those who put their complete trust in Christ’s
finished atoning work. Circumcision adds nothing to Christ: rather, if our
trust is here, it detracts from the true gospel.
The Holy Spirit is the key to liberty. We should let Jesus be Lord through
the Spirit and the Word of God. We should let the faith that brought us the
gift of the Holy Spirit - be the faith that maintains our Christian walk.
Such is the challenge of Paul to the Galatians.
Memory Verse: 3:2 - *“This only would I learn from you. Did you receive
the Spirit from works of law, or from hearing of faith?”*
