   *T1101R - NUMBERS - OVERVIEW - A HANDBOOK FOR PILGRIMS*


 *1. 1:1-4 (1-4) THE NUMBERING. “And Jehovah spoke unto Moses ... 2 Take ...
the number of the names, every male, by their polls; 3 from twenty years old
and upward, all that are able to go forth to war in Israel, you and Aaron
shall number them by their hosts. 4 And with you there shall be a man of
every tribe; every one head of his fathers' house.” *You know every one in
Your army, Father. There is *none* unimportant with you. You do *all
things*decently and in order. It is
*Your* Son Jesus who builds His Messianic Community, and manifests Your
Kingdom through it! *Hallowed be your :name.*


 *2. 9:23 (5-9) THE INSTRUCTION. “At the commandment of Jehovah they
encamped, and at the commandment of Jehovah they journeyed: they kept the
charge of Jehovah at the commandment of Jehovah by Moses” *We like Moses
delight to do Your will according to Your command, Father. And who you set
forth like Judah in front of us, we will follow in his train. *Your :kingdom
come.*


 *3, 14:20-21 (10-14) THE JOURNEYING. “And Jehovah said, I have pardoned
according to your word: 21 but in very deed, as I live, all the earth shall
be filled with the glory of Jehovah.” *How close Israel came to judgment
here, Father! And yet the first generation did not escape. Yet in the midst
of their rebellion, still in mercy You fed them! *Your :will be done, As in
heaven, so on earth.*


 *4. 18:8 (15-20) THE WANDERING. “And Jehovah spoke unto Aaron, And I,
behold, I have given you the charge of my heave-offerings, even all the
hallowed things of the children of Israel; unto you have I given them by
reason of the anointing, and to your sons, as a portion for ever.” *A
special anointing rests upon those called to special service. You have done
this, Father, and it is good in our eyes. *Our :daily :bread Give us this
day.*


 *5. 24:13 (21-25) THE NEW JOURNEYING. And Balaam said, “If Balak would give
me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the word of Jehovah,
to do either good or bad of my own mind; what Jehovah speaks, that will I
speak.” *This should always be our mind concerning Your words, Father! Write
this truth upon our hears. *And forgive us our :debts, As we also have
forgiven our :debtors.*


 *6. 27:21 (26-27) THE NEW NUMBERING. “And he shall stand before Eleazar the
priest, who shall inquire for him by the judgment of the Urim before
Jehovah: at his word shall they go out, and at his word they shall come in
both he, and all the children of Israel with him, even all the
congregation.” *By Urim and Thummim through the High Priest would Joshua
have good success. By failing to inquire at Ai and with the Gibeonites, he
was chagrined. *And bring us not into temptation.*


 *7. 33:55 (28-36) THE NEW INSTRUCTION. “But if you will not drive out the
inhabitants of the land from before you, then shall those that you let
remain of them be as pricks in your eyes, and as thorns in your sides, and
they shall vex you in the land in which you live.” *We hear this word,
Father. Procrastination, disobedience and rebellion concerning our inward
Canaanites will vex us too! *But deliver us from the evil one.*



 *NOTE**: *The titles for these 7 sections came from J. Sidlow Baxter's
“Explore the Book.” He was generous in giving permission to use these
limited quotations. By all means, dip into this useful store-house.


 God provided Israel a cloud by day, and a fiery pillar by night for their
guidance, protection and warmth. What is our New Testament equivalent for
this marvelous type? The Holy Spirit in our hearts is God's greater than an
equivalent.


 It is a most unusual lesson for us concerning Balaam. He was really a false
prophet immersed in the occult. But when it came to words concerning Israel,
God imposed on Balaam such a restraint, that all he could do was bless her,
much to Balak's chagrin. Balaam coveted Balak's promised reward, but could *
not* go beyond God's word. Even his female donkey cooperated with God. Yet
in his private suggestions to Balak later on - how to get the young men of
Israel to sin with Balak's young women, this brought about the hidden
desires of his heart. However, in the end he died in battle with the
Moabites for his sin!


 The Urim and Thummim is mentioned in Numbers, as well as Exodus. Men like
Joshua and King David depended on the guidance of Urim. They never missed,
as long as they remembered to consult God through Urim. Proverbs 6:20-22
indicates the New Testament equivalent to Urim. It is the Word of God in our
hearts, anointed and meditated upon. George Muller faithfully walked in this
truth, and like David and Joshua, never missed God as long as he applied
this principle. 50,000 answers to prayer are testimony by Muller of this
infallible New Testament equivalent.


 And lastly, disobedience on the part of the 12 tribes of Israel in failing
to drive out the 7 Canaanitish nations, each one larger than Israel, brought
about the fulfillment of God's warning not to do so. Idolatry, forsaking the
God of their fathers, and the falling into deep immorality - these were the
evils that befell Israel for their initial failure to drive out these 7
bankrupt nations.


 One pastor in Alberta, Canada many decades ago, found “Numbers” to be his
favorite book. It *does* have most valuable typical lessons for us. - J.A.W.
