*NOTE**:* 2:13-16 - In Mark 16 we read that *God* confirmed the word of the
apostles with *signs following*. Paul reminded the Corinthians that they saw
his apostolic ministry to them thus confirmed. The Thessalonians before them
had the same confirmation of the Word of God, and indeed saw it *not* as the
word of man, but the word of God. Paul spelled this out to the Corinthians
in 1 Cor. 14:37, by declaring that his words were *not* his, but the Lord
commanding through him. Then Paul contrasted the attitude of the
Thessalonian believers with that of the unbelieving Jews, who rejected God's
word through Jesus and the prophets, and killed them.

2:17-20 - The heart of Paul is not understood by some, but passages such as
this more than show his yearning and longing over the new converts that came
to the Lord through his word. He knew his presence with them could result in
a deeper discipleship and intimacy with the Lord as a result of his
heart-ministry for them. No wonder Satan opposed and hindered his desire!
And again in 2:19 he declares the importance for believers to stand firm
until the Lord returns, whether through sleep (death) prior to His return -
or at His coming again - the hope that purifies. Paul again returns to the
great theme of Christ's Second Coming.

3:1-10. It is because of Paul's great concern for the growth and
establishment of the Thessalonian believers that he denied himself the help
of Timothy, and sent him to take his place with them. He knew the temptation
to fall back from the Lord, under hardships and fiery persecution. The
Thessalonians knew this fiery trial, both from the Jews, and from the
Gentiles that the Jews influenced. Paul had forewarned them of such
afflictions. Many missionaries failed to clearly warn new Chinese believers
of such persecution, and as a result multitudes fell away. Mao's wife said,
Soon there will be no more church and no Christians.” She was *wrong*!
Brother Yun, the Heavenly Man, confirmed that the blood of martyrs is the
seed of the church. Tens of millions came to the Lord starting in the 1970's
to the present in the underground church of China, composed of small
churches in homes. It is a parallel situation to what the Thessalonians
faced. They experienced the 7th and 8th Beatitudes of Matthew 5. They were
persecuted for living righteous lives! And - they were persecuted for being
identified with Jesus, and not being ashamed of Him, even under heavy
persecution. *He that endures to the end shall be saved. *The underground
church of China should shame and humble us for our materialism and
easy-believism in America!

In 3:11-13 - Paul continues in lifting up these dear and beloved new
converts. “*Unblamable in holiness” * is the way hearts are established!
“Through tribulation to Glory” is the example of today's Underground Church
in China. God in His mercy is raising up trouble and persecution for the
church of the Western World to humble us and direct us back to Jesus and the
early church, and the church of suffering in other lands such as China.
Materialism can be a curse. God through Solomon wisely said - *“Give me
neither poverty nor riches; Feed me with the food that is needful for
me: 9Lest I be full, and deny you,
and say, Who is Jehovah? Or lest I be poor, and steal, And use profanely the
name of my God” (Proverbs 30:8b-9).*
