hoi de Pha-riSAIoi Ele-gon, En to ARchon-ti [758] dai-moNIon [1140] ekBALlei [1544] ta daiMOni-a.

NOTE: 9:10-13 - See how bondage to strict liturgy such as the Jewish leaders practiced - can be such a great hindrance to evangelism of souls. They cared morefor their little traditional adherences - over against God's estimate of one soul being worth morethan the whole world! And - they killed Jesus for upsetting their “majoring on minorsand minoringon majors!”

9:14-17. And John the Baptist's disciples were somewhat caught up in the same distortion. They felt that observance of Pharisaic fast days - was more important than rejoicing in the presence of Jesus, who was the exact image of the unseen God! But what of us today? Do we not have our denominational rituals and beliefs which we put ahead of the “One New Man” and the Eldership of all local churches in the Gate of each City?

Note the Wine-skin illustration Jesus uses in 9:17. He says we ought to put new (NEon) wine into fresh or renewed(kaiNOUS) wine-skins. In the Middle-East, following the first use of a wine-skin - it is notcast aside. Rather, it is renewed. The process is to turn a goat or sheep wine-skin inside out. It is then scrubbed with a stiff brush and lye. But before the lye destroys the skin, it is then washed off with warm, soapy water. Next it is kneaded and softened with oil. Everytrace of bacteria from the first usage, has now been eliminated. It is then reversed, sown up, and new wine can safelybe put into it. Bacteria from the former wine is removed, so that violent fermentation will not take place, spilling the wine and destroying the wine-skin.

Application: Pastrevivals are like oldwine. Renewed wine-skins - devoid of allbacteria from the past revival mustbe removed. Then and only then can a fresh Visitation of the Spirit come into such a prepared church container. Then the new wine of the Spirit will notbe spilled, and the wine-skin of the renewedchurch will notbe destroyed.

And, what is true in this analogy corporately for the church, is alsotrue for usindividually! We are notto hold on to past revivals - but cleanse ourselves as wine-skins - until we have been completelyrenewed. Thenwe are ready for a fresh Visitation!

9:32-34 - The Pharisees were completely ignorant concerning their sin of blasphemy against the Holy Spirit: namely, attributing to Satan - what the Holy Spirit was doing through Jesus. Is such done today? Rarely, but it isdone. I met one man in 1945 who had committed this sin. He blasphemed the Holy Spirit, and forced me to command him to leave us, as I was in the midst of leading a young man in the Canadian Air force to the Lord. May God lead us to avoid such a sin. See 1 John 5:16b - Thereis a sin unto death: notconcerning this I say that he makerequest!” - J.A.W.
